Hangin’ With the SAND Gang…
The whole gang from SAND (Support After Neonatal Death) hadn’t been in one place together in a few years – there have been events where some made it, but never everyone – so we all got together yesterday at Mark & Gabi’s for a barbecue. It wvas great to see everyone’s kids so much older and to get caught up. Gabi’s working, Heather now has a private practice in addition to working at the school, Suzanne got an “Outstanding Graduate Student” award and is graduating from the Masters program @ SF State this Saturday. Of course, I shared all my knitting news and let my head get big with all the fuss over my weight loss.
Unfortunately, when I was in picture-taking mode, Heather was out of the room on a phone call from a new client, but here are some glimpses at our time together. I was really proud of Thing One & Thing Two for how they jumped in and played with the little kids, were nice to them and patient with them, etc. It’s got to be hard being that much older than all the other kids in a group, and they did very well.
Our lives are all so very different that we never would have met each other if we didn’t all belong to that exclusive club of parents who lost their babies. It’s a very special bond that we share – other people don’t “get” what we’ve been through the way other bereaved parents do. None of us would ever have chosen to have lost a baby, but we’re all grateful for the friendships in this group. We definitely need to get together more often than we have been.
