Good-Bye, Dave

P6170069

Dave (the dad in the picture) was a long-time acquaintance of ours and a best friend to our friend Sean (Sean lived with Dave, Lynn & the kids when Sean was engaged to be married).  Last Thursday night, while he was at his dad’s house in Boulder, CO going over paperwork related to his dad’s estate (his dad passed away just a few weeks ago), Dave died in a house fire.  As if that weren’t horrific enough, the media reported Dave’s death BEFORE Lynn was notified, so she found out about it from a news report.  I just can’t wrap my brain/heart around how that must have felt for her.

Please pray for Lynn and the kids Trevor (pictured above), Stone, and Malia.   They will be in a lot of pain for a long time - Sean, too.

Overheard

[Talking with another fifth-grade mom while our daughters and others were hanging out.]

Erica:  Hang on, let me turn this down.  I put on all T1’s favorite music.

Linda:  Oh, is that The Jonas Brothers?

Erica:  No…Green Day.

I dunno, maybe you had to be there, but that just cracked me up.  (For those who don’t know, The Jonas Brothers are a Disney Channel boy band.  Green Day is an alternative/punk band from the Bay Area.)

Catching Up

Sorry I haven’t been posting as often these days.  You can blame Facebook.  It’s so easy to update with a line or two about what’s going on, and far more people know what’s up with me & fam than on here.  I know I only have a handful of readers on here, but I have 300+ contacts on Facebook (How did THAT happen???).  If you’re on Facebook and you know my last name, go ahead and “friend” me.

That said, not a lot to report in the last week.

OH!  I *did* finish and mail off The Next Big Thing.  Early last week, I found out that boss-lady had to mail TNBT off to the publisher on the 10th, not the 15th, so I had crank like crazy to finish it.  I believe I was the second customer of the day on Saturday at The UPS Store (Sorry, Ruthie - no MBE’s around here!) so that I could get it to boss-lady in NY this morning.  She liked the photo I sent her of it; I hope she likes the real thing even more.

Nothing else terribly exciteing to report on here.

Hubby’s Birthday Meat-a-Palooza

Forget the Stupor Bowl; the big event of the weekend was Hubby’s Birthday Meat-a-Palooza on Saturday.

MENU:

  • 2 racks of pork spareribs
  • 1 leg of lamb
  • 2 rotisseried chickens
  • 2 big slabs of salmon
  • 2 rabbits
  • 3 apple-stuffed pork loins (one huge one cut into thirds and prepared)
  • a huge beef tenderloin cut and made into bacon-wrapped filet mignons
  • buffalo sliders
  • wild boar sliders
  • wild boar bacon
  • regular beef sliders
  • hot dogs for the kids
  • assorted side dishes, desserts, etc.

Yes, folks, the guys got approximately 65 pounds of meat to feed 35 people.  Uh, yeah.  Here’s what we never even touched during the party:

  • the second rack of ribs
  • the second chicken
  • the second rabbit
  • the second salmon slab
  • the beef tenderloin
  • the regular burgers
  • the second and third pork loins

We gave away the ribs, chicken, and a big loaf of French bread to the teens’ Stupor Bowl party at church.  Leftover carrot cake went for pre-church snackies at Bring Your Neighbor Day.  Extra exotic meat burgers are in the freezer.  Second rabbit became yesterday’s lunch.  Second salmon slab is brining in preparation for smoking tonight.  We’re having company tonight to help us eat the pork loins.  B/c we’re not worried about losing quality in the ground beef (it was previously frozen, then thawed for the party), I’m going to make it into patties today and freeze them.  Since it’s “Moms’ Week” at church this Wednesday, Hubby’s going to have a bunch of dads & kids over for dinner on Wednesday.  I hope they save me some filet mignon!!!
