Books

Once-a-Month Cooking, Revised and Expanded: A Proven System for Spending Less Time in the Kitchen and Enjoying Delicious, Homemade Meals Every DayGrandma Ruthie got me this book for Christmas after I’d heard about it on Focus on the Family.  We don’t have the freezer space for me to cook only once a month, but the book actually has a few two-week plans, also.  I’m really enjoying using it.  At first, I read through it, but didn’t try any of the recipes b/c I needed to use up a bunch of meat I had in the freezer already.  It did, however, inspire me to do certain stuff to pre-prepare things to make life easier.  Yesterday, I spent just a couple of afternoon hours in the kitchen and ended up with having four pork loin dishes, three chicken dishes, a beef pot roast, and three other beef dishes in the freezer ready to go.  Some need to be thawed then thrown into the Crock Pot.  Some are already cooked and just need to be thawed and reheated.  This month is the first time I’ve ever really planned our meals in advance.  I know, pretty bad, considering I’ve been a full-time mom since August 1998, but at least I’m doing it now.  Having things planned even made it easier for me to help someone out — one of the little old ladies at church is dying of cancer, and when the call went out for meals for her & her son, it was really easy for me to say “Sure!  I know exactly what I can take.”

This also goes along with January organizing.  Before I was able to do the first batch of planning two weeks ago, I had to clean out & organize my pantry so I knew what I had already.  Too bad I hadn’t done this before — turns out I already had mustard and didn’t need to buy some when Grandma & Grandpa were here.  Oh, well.  It’s REALLY nice to be able to look in there and see everything.  Now, the upshot of this is that when Thing Two helps me put away the groceries (a chore she actually enjoys), I need to make sure she puts things in the right place instead of just letting her put things wherever she feels like putting them.  That’s OK, though.  I also cleaned out my dresser and my side of the closet just over a week ago.  It’s really nice to be able to walk in there and not have a ton of stuff lying on top of the closet bar, etc., etc.  I didn’t dare do Hubby’s side, though; I’m sure I’d get rid of the wrong stuff.  One of the local charities came by on Tuesday, so I was able to donate a bunch of clothes, too.  It was hard to let go of some of the “skinny clothes”, but I had to realize that by the time they fit me, they won’t be close to in style any more.  Next up in the organizing:  the linen closet and the coat closet.

The Best of Interweave Knits: Our Favorite Designs from the First Ten Years (Interweave)Um.  OK.  This is rather awkward, but I’ll ask anyway.  This book was on my wish list, then it showed up as purchased.  Um.  Here’s the awkward part.  If you bought this for me, you should know that it never arrived.  If you started to buy it, but then cancelled the order, please let me know so that I can change it to unpurchased.

Circle of Life

I was thinking recently about how “they” say that knitting groups go through the circle of life with each other.  When I thought more, I realized that our group definitely has.  Since we formed back in October of 2005:

- Helga had her baby
- Jeannette decided to get divorced
- Bea lost her mom
- Emily’s mom was diagnosed w/breast cancer and had a mastectomy
- Jeannette lost her mom on January 2nd

I am continually amazed at the generosity of knitters.  People in the group (AND Kathryn, the owner of our LYS) contributed so much for the flowers for ‘Nette’s mom’s funeral (two days ago) that our flower arrangement was the biggest one there.  It was HUGE.  Sandy, who’s been an email part of our group for a long time, but has only once or twice been able to attend, had the idea for us to make a knitted bouquet that ‘Nette could keep afterwards.  It turned out great, and ‘Nette loved it and was proudly showing it off to people at the reception after the service.  Once again, Kathryn also helped out, as did her nine-year-old daughter and Thing Two.  Very cool.

So, here’s the knitted bouquet.  Sandy took pictures from each side so that all the flowers would be visible.  (If you’ve been wondering what the flowers in my “2008 F.O.’s” were, they were my contributions for this.)  Sandy did such a great job on this, figuring out how to do it, getting vase, and assembling it all.

Chugging Along

Well, I missed the initial deadline on these two projects (I detect a developing pattern here; I think I need to shape up), but they’re chugging along:

This one has progressed, too.  Other stuff?  Just.  Do.  Not.  Ask.  (Uh, can I get a week in a cabin alone to crank on stuff?  Well, not totally alone; Hubby can spend the nights.)

Tuesday Knit Night

1-15-08 David's Birthday 004 Jeannette and The Brain-Eating Monster.

1-15-08 David's Birthday 003 David in “The Obscene Birthday Hat”, with Jeannette, our fearless leader.

Jeannette was in a “Zen-giving-stuff-away” mood that day, so we all came home with goodies.  Here’s half of what I got (the other thing will either get gifted or given away as a blog prize, so I won’t show it here).

Back to the Drawing Board…

This was SUPPOSED to be a birthday present for my pal Robin.  Uh, I don’t think so.  Thing Two has claimed it now.

Pattern = Pillbox from The Opinionated Knitter by Elizabeth Zimmermann.  I didn’t sew up the hem b/c T2 liked it the way it was.

Yarn = Artful Yarns Shakespeare.  I HATE THIS YARN!  It wasn’t really spun - more like roving that had been drafted and was ready for spinning.  WAY too fragile.  On the upside, I *did* get really good at the old-fashioned spit-splice.

Needles = US size 7’s (Inox)

Hmmm….

P1140004 Why is this man not at work on a Monday morning?  Why is he wearing sunglasses indoors?  Why are the bedroom blinds closed?

Any guesses, people?

Mistakes

FIRST MISTAKE:  Agreeing to let Thing One make fudge from one of her many cookbooks.

SECOND MISTAKE:  Tasting it.

THIRD MISTAKE:  Not making my company take all or most of it home with them when they left.

FOURTH MISTAKE:  Not getting rid of it some other way afterwards.

RESULT:  This.  Oy.
