Using a suggestion from Erin today:

When growing up did your family share your love of books? If so, did one person get you into reading? And, do you have any family-oriented memories with books and reading? (Family trips to bookstore, reading the same book as a sibling or parent, etc.)

Absolutely!  I “caught” my love of books from my parents.  They were both reading all the time when I was a kid.  I don’t remember ever living in a house (when I lived at home) that didn’t have built-in bookcases in at least one room and books all over. When I was little, my dad would sit on my bed and read to me from the Bible at bedtime.  When I got a little older and was able to read well, I would read to him (King James, no less!).  When I hit the pre-teen years, I even (to my shame) learned how to use it to my benefit, reading him his favorite Psalm when I was in trouble, etc.  My dad was always a sucker in a bookstore.  I can’t count how many Sundays I came home with a book b/c I went out after church with my dad for a Coke and a trip to the bookstore.  There were even times when I didn’t have anything particular in mind, but I scrambled to find something I’d want when he told me to choose a book.  I collected the Nancy Drew mystery stories, and he kept a list of which ones I had, so often when he went on a business trip, the gift he would bring back for me would be a new Nancy Drew book.

For my birthday or Christmas, he would usually get me a book in addition to my “regular” Christmas presents - when I was younger, Nancy Drews, when I was older things like a collection of short stories by a local writer, etc.  My dad reads more “thoughtful” books, but my mom reads for entertainment, preferring mysteries, and will read just about anything she can get her hands on.  I once got in trouble as a young teen for swiping her copy of The Fan Club by Irving Wallace and reading it, keeping it hidden between my mattress and my headboard.  When I was discovered, she took it away and told me I couldn’t read it till I was 16.  I just waited a few weeks, then swiped it back again.  I have some of those passages burned in my brain still, and I can’t believe she even thought it would be OK for me to read that kind of trash at 16!  She often passes along her used paperbacks to me, but I’m pretty selective these days about what I’ll take.

Knitting Blog Idea from HUBBY

A direct cut and paste from an email Hubby sent me earlier today:

Has anyone created a list of songs that have knitting references? I was just listening to When I’m 64 by the Beatles and there is a line, You can knit a sweater by the fireside, Sunday mornings go for a ride. I thought it would be fun for your knitting friends to generate a list.

OK, how cool is THAT - Hubby’s thinking about knitblogging and knitting?  Sooo, I’ll get this party started:

Um…umm…ummmmmm…uh, oh.  A little help?
