Yarn

I told you I stink at this!  The short version of the story is this:  I discovered a new (to me) yarn shop yesterday and walked out with five balls of Dale of Norway Baby Ull, each a different shade of blue.  It was all I could do not to buy two or three of every color, but when I did the math — even one of each of the TWENTY-FIVE colors they had would come out to $168.75 + tax — I held back.

Said yarn will become a baby gift for our friends Erik & Florence.

The Yard

  1. Juan sprays weed-killer on the front yard & side strip.
  2. After the yard dries out from this week’s rain, Hubby mows the weeds.
  3. Juan returns to kill the gophers.
  4. Juan & Hubby dig up the dead weeds.
  5. Hubby gets help from the city to replace our old clay pipe from the house to the street (They have a program going on now where they’ll help pay for it).
  6. Remove ancient sprinkler system.
  7. Install drip system.
  8. (This is where I get fuzzy on the order of things.)  Lay down weed barrier with openings for a few flowering shrubs.
  9. Install decorative stone or brick wall with path lighting.
  10. Plant the flowering shrubbery.
  11. Lay out tan bark or something along those lines (not gravel; kids looooove to throw rocks).
  12. Enjoy.

So far, we’re in the waiting stage between #1 and #2.

ETA:  Just got the following email from Nana that had me laughing out loud.

I just found out that [Hubby] has begun a new 12 step program.  We wish him well and look forward to the final results.  At least with this program he is allowed to be known by name.
Mom
Bwah, ha, ha!  I hadn’t noticed that it was 12 steps.  I could comment on that but, well, I, um…just…won’t…go…there.

Overheard

This morning, while Hubby & I were having a long hug before he left for work…

Mmmmm, this feels good.

Would it still feel good if I told you I bought yarn yesterday?

Various & Sundry

Sigh.  I hate not having a camera….

Do. Not.  Ask.  (If I were a blame-shifting kind of person, I’d say that it was Hubby’s fault for telling me that we needed more points on our credit card for our vacation airfare to be covered by frequent flyer miles.  IF I were that kind of person.  I’m not, though, so I won’t say it’s his fault.  Well, not to you at any right.  I might say that to HIM when he asks about the charges, though…)

Well, the last time I saw Auntie, I gave her the altered poncho that I gave her (cough) two (cough) years ago for her birthday.  I still need to deal with the goofy ends, but it’s at least somewhat wearable now.  I gave it to her with the warning that if she ever wore it in public and someone asked about it, she had to say that it was the first garment I ever knit (it was) and that I’m a much better knitter now (I am).

Bob & Ginger received the baby shawl, and they love it.  Woot!

Saturday morning, I cast on for the sweater for Sarah’s baby Jack.  The shower’s this Saturday, so I needed to get started on it.  It’s a basic top-down raglan with a rolled neck - the same pattern I used for Ian’s sweater. This one, however, is in Peaches & Creme in navy with bright yellow stripes.  Yupp, Cal colors.  Eric is a Cal fan, so I thought he’d like that.  Go, Bears!

Ordered (cough) the yarn (cough) for Robin’s baby shawl from Webs.  Can you say “anniversary sale”?  I’m probably going to have to get  a copy of the Creatures of the Reef shawl pattern in order to get the bits I want.  I hate to spend that much money when I’m not really planning to use all of it, but what can you do?

Had a great weekend with Grandma Ruthie & Grandpa Gil, though it was much too short.  Jesse’s bday party was lots of fun (and too much food!).  It’s weird to think that he’s 16 now.

Our friend Juan is helping Hubby with yard stuff.  Hubby finally got fed up with the “gopher sanctuary” and the weed garden, so the landscaping has jumped up the priority list.  No idea how long it will take or what it will cost, but it will be cool and low-maintenance when it’s done.  Hubby has realized that he’s not a “lawn guy”, so there will be no front lawn — some sort of ground cover or even tan bark with a few flowering shrubs (plus some climbing jasmine for me).
