Knitting Magic Tricks

Behold the weird-looking knitted object.  What is it, an experiment gone awry?

Flip it over, give it a fold here and there, and (to quote the designer) hey, presto, eureka and lo - a baby sweater (awaiting buttons)!

Something funky for Miss Mahalia LeeMarie (Nicole’s baby-to-be).

Speaking of Mahalia…Please help me settle a dispute w/Hubby.  Hubby’d never heard the name Mahalia before and thought it was weird.  I said, What, being named after Mahalia Jackson?  He said he could go ask 100 random people, and only 1 or 2 would know who Mahalia Jackson was.  Sooooo…which one of us is deceived?  If you know who Mahalia Jackson was, please post a comment to that effect.  I’m fully prepared to concede this one if necessary, but I have more confidence in people.  (Of course, Hubby will probably say that the people who read my blog aren’t average, normal folks, but there’s not much I can do about that.)

Mahalia Jackson is the only Mahalia I know of, but yes, I’ve heard of her. WHat a pretty name!

  2. Yes, I’ve hear of Mahalia Jackson. Not sure who she
is, but yes, I’ve heard the name. I think Mahalia is

I love the BSJ! I’ve always wanted to make one, but haven’t gotten around to it yet. I’m so glad you showed it before it was folded, because I’ve never seen it that way. Now when I make it, I won’t be constantly wondering if I’m doing something wrong.

I hate to admit my ignorance, but I have no idea who Mahalia Jackson is. My husband doesn’t know either.

  6. Denese says:

Mahalia Jackson is a very familiar name to me. I quizzed my husband and he too knows of her . His description is “big-voiced gospel singer.” Two more for your side!

I think we’re pretty much “average, normal folks” but a bit older than you and your Hubby which, since Mahalia Jackson died in 1972, may be a factor .

  7. Liz says:

Mahalia Jackson is extremely well known to the 45+ group. She was a very famous gospel type singer. I can’t imagine anyone who lived throught the sixties that hasn’t heard of her. Hope this helps!

  8. kat says:

hmm, of course that is a name I know…tell hubby he is out numbered!

  9. Erica says:

Liz, 45+??? Hmmm…perhaps I’m old beyond my years? Or am I ahead of my time? (OK, 42’s not far off of 45.)

The age factor might be why Hubby & my sister had no clue who she was. Hubby was born in 1967, my sister in 1971. My sister also has the excuse that she’s about as white-bread as they come, but then again, so am I. Hubby, however, grew up in a predominately black neighborhood, so he should have known Mahalia Jackson.

  10. Erica says:

kat, did you know who she was BEFORE you were in the record business? Do you, like I do, remember seeing TV commercials advertising her albums or compilation albums that she was on?

  11. Kathy says:

    LOVE the baby sweater!

  12. Alan simons says:

    gospel singer

  13. Erica says:

Alan, this is further evidence for Liz’s theory that the “over 45 crowd” knows who Mahalia Jackson was (ducks and runs)…
