Five Years Ago Today…

For my parents’ generation, it was Where were you when you heard Kennedy had been shot?  For my generation, it will always be Where were you when you heard about the World Trade Center bombings?

Sooo, lest we all forget, where were YOU when you heard about the World Trade Center bombings, Flight 93, and the Pentagon?

Hubby was on the way to work when he heard.  He had just turned onto El Camino Real and heard on the radio America is under attack!  He pulled over to the side of the road to listen, thinking he probably needed to turn around and go home.  When he heard that it was in New York, not San Francisco, he continued on to work, but of course they were talking about it and listening to news reports all day.

Thing One was almost three years old, and Thing Two was about six months old.  I was supposed to go for a walk on the Crystal Springs trail with my pal Tanya.  When I got up, I checked my voicemail as I often do and had a message from her saying With everything happening in New York today, I can’t go walking.  Norman has family there, and we’re really worried.  I had no idea what she was talking about, so I turned on the TV, was shocked, then started crying, then called Hubby, who already knew.  I was glued to the TV all day.  I couldn’t turn it off.  Auntie & I tried desperately to get Nana to go home from work b/c we were worried about the Golden Gate Bridge being a target.  I believe it was a Wednesday b/c we had church that night, and I was afraid to go into the City.  In the end, I was glad I went b/c they talked about things to do & not to do in order to help the kids process it, and I realized that it wasn’t helping me or Thing One for me to have the TV on all day, replaying the same scenes over and over again.

What a horrible time.  Do you remember how shocked you were that someone actually attacked us on our own soil?  Do you remember?  You MUST remember.  It’s only been five years, but too many people have forgotten and take it lightly.   Did you watch the TV docudrama last night?  Hubby watched the whole thing, but I only saw 2/3 of it.  It seemed pretty good.  I think the best thing about it was that it reminded me of things I’d forgotten about — the embassy bombing, the bombing in Tangiers, the guy caught on the Canadian border, etc.  At first I had thought that it was too soon, too fresh to have movies made about 9/11, like the one in the theater, but now I disagree.  People need to be reminded.  Do you remember?  You MUST remember, or it will happen again.

Never, ever forget.  Where were YOU?
