Hubby the Triage Nurse, or A Trip to the ER

Hey, Honey.

Mmmmnnnn, what?

When you had blood poisoning in your arm a long time ago from the tailpipe on your friend’s motorcycle, what did it look like?

WhyyyyYYYYYY?

Because I think I have it.

Let me see.

[Hubby struggles out of bed, finds his glasses, and turns on the light.  Erica displays her right foot, complete with Dora the Explorer Band-Aid on her right pinky toe and an interesting red line, extending from underneath the Band-Aid, across her instep, and nearly up to her ankle.]

Yupp.  That’s exactly what it looked like.

What should I do?

You need to drive yourself to the ER.  You can’t wait.  This is a big deal.

What did they do for you when you had it?

Gave me an antibiotic.

At 11:35 p.m., I was starting up the car and pulling out of the driveway, on my way to Seton.  I was very impressed with myself for getting fully dressed — well, except for the one sock and the fact that I was wearing my slippers instead of shoes — and hobbling out to the car.  I had even had the presence of mind to take a library book with me b/c I knew that I was too tired and distracted to take my knitting.  At 2:05 a.m., I was back in the car, on my way home.  Good thing, too, b/c I had finished my book and couldn’t sleep.

Hey.  I’m home.

Hey.  What did they say?

Cellulitis.

What’s that?

Blood poisoning.

What did they do?

Gave me Keflex.

What’s that?

An antibiotic.

So, here I am.  I’m stuck at home b/c the hospital’s instructions tell me to keep my foot elevated as much as possible and to walk as little as possible the first couple of days.  Sigh.  Hubby’s car is temporarily out of commission, and he had to go to work really early this morning, so he didn’t want to ride his bicycle, so he took my car, then came home and drove Thing One to school.  Thing Two is stuck here w/me.  She’s really disappointed to be missing her Miss Claudia class, but I made it a little bit better for her by bending the rules and letting her watch a little TV (right now:  Caillou).

As I lounged in the exam room at the ER, I wondered this to myself:  Is there any medical condition that Nana’s had that I won’t get????  Sheesh!

Oh, and the ER doctor (who looked about 12) said he liked my Dora Band-Aid.
