Birthday

OK, I told Grandma & Bobcat I wanted gift certificates for my birthday this year for yarn-related stuff.  Besides my usual Amazon.com list, here are ideas:

  • www.knitpicks.com gift certificate (yarn)
  • www.amazon.com gift certificate (for knitting books!)
  • gift certificate to my LYS (expensive place, but it’s nice to be able to see the yarns in person and feel them, etc. before buying)

Sgt. Pepper

OK, I swiped this idea off Dani’s blog

Ten Years Ago: I was engaged to hubby.  It was SUCH a crazy time!  I was living in Sausalito, working in mid-town Palo Alto, spending most evenings in San Rafael or Novato, trying to plan our November 19th wedding, trying to find a birth control pill that wouldn’t give me migraines and make me nearly pass out in the middle of the day at work.

Five Years Ago: My FIL had recently died, and we were still reeling from that.  I was pregnant with Thing Two, but we didn’t know yet that she was a she.  I had already started having problems with bleeding and was on varying levels of bed rest off & on.  MOMS Club was still in existence, and I was doing stuff with them.  We were in charge of our church children’s ministry in our area and having lots of problems with that and totally stressing out about it (OK, I was stressing out about it).

One Year Ago: I was in the throes of fresh grief.  My official due date had just passed, and we were planning Thing One’s birthday party.  I was crying a lot and barely functioning at times.

Five Snacks: 94% fat-free popcorn, anything chocolate, chips, French bread dipped in olive oil & dipping spices, something I can “grab & go” like a granola bar/energy bar, etc.

Five Songs I know all the words to:
Sanctuary (church song we used as a lullabye for all our kids), Come to Jesus (sad Mindy Smith song, came out when I was pregnant w/Paul), I Love Rock & Roll (Joan Jett),  Little Wing (Jimi Hendrix), I’ll Stand By You (Pretenders)

Five Things I would do with $100 Million: Pay off all bills, buy a different house actually in the school district we want (no more transfers!) that has an extra room to be my knitting room, give a big chunk to charity (UCSF ICN, HOPE Technology School, our church, Rogue Valley church), pay off our siblings’ and parents’ mortgages (in case of my sister, buy her a condo), buy hubby some really cool vehicles (red Mustang convertible and a Harley).

Five places to run away to: Hmmm.  Not well enough traveled to know.  How about somewhere romantic in the snow, Paris, some island resort with private bunaglows…

Five Things I would never wear:
thong bathing suit (underwear’s a different story, once I have my “real” body back again), something cut “up to here” and “down to there”, a “boobs on a platter” dress/shirt, one of those dopey kitty-cat (or puppy or bunny, etc.) sweatshirts like a well-meaning person gave me for my birthday one time.

Five Favorite shows: Law & Order, The Avengers (didn’t say they had to be current shows!), MAD TV, In Living Color, Exreme Makeover: Home Edition.

Five Biggest Joys:  Being emotionally close w/hubby, hugs, kisses, and happy snuggles & “I love you”’s from the Things, being um…well…REALLY close w/hubby (’nuff said), finishing a difficult knit project for someone and having it turn out well & be well-received, being able to say “no” to cake or something else that’s calling my name.

Five Favorite Toys: Currently?  Bamboo knitting needles, my “new” car, my big red Kitchen Aid mixer, my laptop, my digital camera.

Babies, Babies, Babies…

Babies, babies everywhere!

A good friend of mine called me yesterday to let me know that her grandson had been born, but was having problems and was in the ICN.  Now, you’d think a first grandchild would be cause for rejoicing, but this is one of those bittersweet mixed blessings.  My friend is only 47, and her son — the baby’s dad — just turned 18.  Yeah.  Not exactly the way you want to become a grandma.  It’s really a godsend that the baby was kept in the hospital b/c of his jaundice.  If he’d gone right away, he would have ended up as a SIDS baby when he stopped breathing the first time.  They’ve figured out what’s wrong, and he’ll be fine with no lasting damage, but he’ll be in the hospital another five or six days.  Talk about stressful…

Our friends Patrick & Anita got a call late the other night that the baby they were going to adopt was being born.  They’ve been afraid of being disappointed again (they had three miscarriages last year), so they hadn’t bought anything other than an infant car seat.  They’re due to come home from the hospital today with him.  LaSchaunda and I got on the email and the phone and gathered up some immediate essentials to tide them through till their baby shower.  I also went to Target intending to get a few things, and spent $100.  Ooops!  I’m hitting up some other mutual friends for some money to chip in for it.  Grandma Ruthie heard me talking to people and even gave me $15 herself!  So, long story short, welcome baby DeShaun (means “God is gracious”) Jordan!  He was 8 lbs, 2 oz, 20″ long at birth, with a full head of hair.  Reports are that he’s very cute.

My friend Arlene had her baby Amanda Lynn yesterday.  Mom, dad, big sister Ally, and big brother Neo are all doing fine.

So, welcome to Aaron, DeShaun, and Amanda!  Guess I have some knitting to do (yeah, like I actually need an excuse…).

Secret Pal Stuff

Well, my secret pal’s frustrated.  We’ve been emailing back & forth and apparently my package from her got lost/delayed in the mail.  She sent one to me and one to someone in Australia on the same day.  The one to Australia already got there, but mine hasn’t arrived yet!

After all this suspense, I’ll probably mug the mailman when he finally brings it!  ;->

Grandma’s Leaving

05 Sept Grandma's Leaving Well, our visit from Grandma Ruthie is over.  Hubby, Thing One, and Grandma left a little while ago for Rick’s big 40th birthday bash.  Thing Two is sick, so that’s why we didn’t go.  She didn’t get the bug very badly this time, but I kept her home to dope her up and get her well fast.

We didn’t take too many pictures this trip, but the girls had lots of fun having “sleepovers” with Grandma in the living room.  This morning, Jenna climbed up on the futon with them to snuggle.  Now that she thinks she’s suddenly allowed up on the furniture, we’ll have fun breaking her of that!  ;->

The party for Rick should be great.  Grandma put together some great photo albums of old pictures.  We had buttons made as favors with his h.s. graduation picture on them.  Grandma and Adri planned some kind of game.  Hubby is manning the barbecue to cook the carne asada, and Big Mike is deep-frying a turkey.  Adri bought a big 1/2-sheet cake, and I made a chocolate/butterscotch 1/4-sheet cake, too (at her request; I wasn’t butting in).  Hubby’s probably a little glad I’m not there b/c w/o me there, no one will be bugging him to dance.  If I were there, I’d probably have to dance with the girls (I’m weird about not dancing with men other than hubby or my dad).  Can’t wait to hear all about it!
