The Preemie Project

My apologies.  I should have posted this several days ago.  Anyhow, here’s Laura’s post about how The Preemie Project’s first big donation to the University of Iowa’s intensive care nursery went:

University of Iowa Hospitals and Clnics NICU - Donation Drop Off Day!

The Preemie Project made it’s very first hospital donation on 9/2/2005 to The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics NICU in Iowa City, Iowa.  It was such an exciting and important day!

Here is a sneak peak at the NICU and the four tubs containing our donation.  We weren’t able to take other pictures because we had stopped in at a very busy time.  They still took the time to tell us how excited they were to receive our donation.  What wonderful people they have working in this unit.

Here were our donation totals:

139 Hat and Bootie Sets

98 Blankets

We were a little short on our large blanket donation goal.  We really need all of the large blankets that we can get.  The large blanket sizes range from a 30″ to 36″ square.  The blankets may be knitted, crocheted or sewn.  We are also always accepting donations of blanket sewing materials: flannel, fleece, Wright’s Blanket Binding, Thread etc.

While our greatest need is for large blankets, we also have a need for these items: (please see the Preemie Measurements Guide for all.)

-Hat and Bootie Sets  (of all sizes)

-Blankets: SM- 20″ to 25″ square

-going home outfits (of all sizes, preemie to newborn): dresses, sweaters, onesies, diaper covers   (soakers) etc,.  These items can be handmade or store bought

-Supplies: office supplies like cardstock, printer paper, pastel colored paper etc.  SOFT BABY yarn, sewing supplies, etc.  Preemie-Newbron new or gently used store-bought clothing

Thank you so much to all of my last-minute ANGELS!  I appreciate your help.

The next donation to The University of Iowa is just around the corner on 11/1/2005.  We also have a donation of pumpkin hats and booties to be made just before the 11/1 donation.  Keep up the great work!  I am so impressed with what this group has accomplished in such a short time.  It seems like this project was just getting started just yesterday.  I am so blessed to have such wonderful volunteers  who have made this project a reality.  With their help I am able to  envision great things in the coming months.  Thank you to all of the volunteers!

Please remember that no donation is ever too small.  Every little bit counts and helps tremendously.  If you would like to become a volunteer for The Preemie Project please contact me by email:

They only had two lawn chaises to sleep and sit in. I took pictures and will send them tomorrow?! (I am not the most technical type!) Men were especially grateful for the Antiperspirant….those little things!

Shhhh!

05 Sept Pink Fuzzy Remember how Thing One asked for “a fuzzy pink scarf” for her birthday?  Well, here it is.  Her actual birthday isn’t until the 22nd, but her party is tomorrow (so we could have it while Grandma was in town).  She’ll get her other presents from us on her birthday, but I can’t wait to give her this, so I’m going to give it to her tomorrow at her party.

05 Sept Pink Fuzzy Detail  The dog buttons looked stupid with this, so I used the pink butterflies, one on each end.  If I ever get around to making her a sweater, I’ll put the dogs on the sweater.

A Bag & A Pin

05 Sept Neon Bag & Rose Pin 003  Here are my latest felting projects.  The rose pin is actually not sewn together yet, but that’s how it will look.  I need to do some work on the blossom b/c it got fuzz from the other yarns on it, so it looks a little mangy.  It will be fine when I get the extra fiber off.  The blossom is Lamb’s Pride worsted, and the leaf is Kool-Aid-dyed Lopi.

I’m calling the bag “Dotted Neon” or something like that.  It’s Kool-Aid-dyed Lopi with a little LB Trellis leftover from one of Linda’s birthday scarves back in February.  I didn’t realize that I had some left, so I was very excited when I found it in the attic.  I still need to put some kind of closure on it, either Velcro or a magnetic one.  That’s a 10-inch ruler there next to it for size.  I’m thinking of it as a make-up bag or a little clutch.  I had thought it might be a pencil case (I want to have some stuff at the holiday boutique that will appeal to kids and be lower-priced), but it’s not the right size/shape.

I didn’t use a pattern for either one, just made it up as I went along.
